Chapter of the Year
Vietnam Veterans of America recognized Chapter 1041, Martin County, Florida as the Chapter of the Year at the 17th annual Vietnam Veterans of America National Convention in Springfield, Illinois, on July 25 2015.
There are 700 chapters nationally, and over 30 VVA Chapters in the state of Florida. Chapter 1041 was selected due to their success in partnering with community organizations such as the United Way, the Martin County Business Develpment Board, Indian River State College and the Boy Scouts (to name a few) in helping local veterans.
Although the Chapter is only five years old, it is one of the most active veterans group in the county. Through generous community support, the Chapter has been successful in raising money to assist veterans of all eras by:
Establishing a Rapid Response Fund, which is administered through the Martin County Veterans Service Office and provides temporary financial assistance for rent, food, utilities, etc.
Partnering with the United Way, Martin County Business Development Board, Indian River State College and Career Source to host two job fairs a year
Funding ten scholarships to veterans at the Indian River State College Fast Track to Manufacturing Program.
Raising $21,000 for the Veterans Council’s purchase of a new bus with wheelchair lift to take veterans to the
VA hospital in West Palm Beach
Hosting Agent Orange Town Hall meeting with Port St. Lucie Chapter 566
Working with the Boy Scouts to fund a memorial for Purple Heart Recipients
Funding a Memorial to the Vietnam War in Memorial Park in Stuart, Florida
Chapter President, Lew Jones, credits the support of the community along with the hard work of the membership in accomplishing their goals of helping local veterans.
